| Press Releases - The Emet Gallery, a new community-centred art gallery... |
DATE: April 2, 2007 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Emet Gallery, a new community-centred art gallery, gears up for a full month of public programs. MONTREAL - The Emet Gallery is a new photography and multimedia art gallery devoted to stimulating dialogue and community building. Located at Congregation Dorshei Emet, Montreal’s Reconstructionist Synagogue, the Emet Gallery is envisioned as a hub of activity. The Emet Gallery is intended as a catalyst for its congregation and the broader community to question, debate, and uncover issues related to spirituality, ethics, and culture. The Emet Gallery’s inaugural exhibition is an audio-visual installation featuring the video-art of Shuli Nachshon. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Numi-Numi: Collecting Cradle Songs, Connecting Cultures, is a video-wall of people singing lullabies. Thelullaby recordings, collected from around the world and sung in many languages, are intricately arranged in kinetic patterns displayed in what the artist has referred to as “a wall of peace.” Hailing from Israel, Nachshon emphasizes the commonalities between people of different cultures and religions. The exhibition emphasizes the universality of a practice such as singing lullabies. An opening vernissage will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2007. The Gallery’s first series of events are inspired by lullabies, addressing themes of family, motherhood and the sometimes-delicate bonds that bridge generations. On Sunday, April 29, the gallery will host an afternoon of family programs. This will include a pajama party for kids, a panel discussion on the significance of lullabies, and live performances of lullabies from a diverse cultural cross-section of the Montreal community. On May 13, The Emet Gallery teams up with Klez Kanada to host a Mother’s Day concert with renowned mother-child klezmer musicians who will unite especially for this occasion. All Emet Gallery events are open to the public and will be held at Congregation Dorshei Emet.
